It would be great to think it was just a joke but I also think they were paying homage to Bride by saying that.
If you noticed, this movie tried to call out to previous films more than Curse did, and some of that was in the form of things said in lines.
So sadly, I do think it was stated as factual information as it connects Bride. Whilst I am not 100% against it, I still would have preferred that he did something more to gain access to this kind of ability as it is quite a powerful spell.
It would be like as if Freddy said he got his power of being a dream demon by eating magic cupcakes. Such awesome abilities sourced from such stupid shit. Lol.

Even in Bride that kind of cheesed me, to be honest. I get Bride was supposed to have a comedy aspect, but for the voodoo stuff, I'd prefer if they wrote it so that Tiffany knew by looking through Charles Lee Ray's possessions and whatnot, rather than some book you could get at Barnes and Noble.

Unfortunately, this is where I have issues with Don's writing. Whilst I do respect his creation he does tend to throw a lot of his own opinions in his writing. He hated the Voodoo aspect that was introduced by Tom Holland so has down played it once he was given more creative freedom. Whist I get this isn't what he had intended for the character, it is there, and ironically where Tom Holland made these changes so this wouldn't become a franchise character, it was his additions to Don's script that helped reinforce it and make it just the opposite. I think if they went with Don's original direction it could have only went so many films far or potentially ended up in Straight to Video hell a lot sooner. So again, whilst I respect Don's creative genius, he also needs to respect what makes Chucky work even if it wasn't his idea. But... He down plays the voodoo because he isn't a fan. Same goes for the line Chucky said about Hannibal. Not only was that cringe worthy, but it was a bit of a shameless self plug. Unless you're a die hard fan like us, no one will get that joke. Before anyone bites my head off, I am not saying I don't respect Don's work or vision. I would love to meet him someday, but this doesn't mean I have to blindly accept everything that comes along with these movies. Unfortunately, this is the downside to having the same ppl behind every film in the franchise. Whilst it's great in many ways, this is one of those things that sometimes makes someone wonder if it would "behove" Universal to get fresh blood involved. See what I did there.

I totally agree. I respect the creative freedom, but much like non-Seed fans are told Glen/Glenda, or Seed entirely is part of the franchise, so is that voodoo aspect.
And yeah, that Hannibal line made me cringe as well. It was funny, but at the same time it kind of had me like "really?".
And yeah, I can't really fall in line with this mentality of just blindly accepting everything under the guise of being a "true Chucky fan" or whatever. There's all these bullshit, hypocritical arguments going on accusing people of being "close-minded" because they don't love everything in the franchise, and it's annoying as shit, especially with people not "loving" Cult. It's just dumb as shit to be like that, calling someone close-minded while you throw their opinion out the window. Love it, like it, enjoy it, hate it, fuck it, whatever, it's staying with the franchise that makes you a fan, not having a fan-gasm over everything involved.

In the comments section of the dvd, Don explains that he was wrong in Curse, not making Chucky body's bleed... In Cult there's lot of blood again, but as i wrote in other thread it's a production/budget thing... he talks about the CULT thing too (first idea was 3 similar chuckies).

Hmm maybe I'll check those out. I just am not really hankering for a rewatch anytime soon.
