Well technically since Cult is out (at least in the U.S., sorry other folk, but we'll keep this talk isolated here for another month or so), let's dig into the actual movie and share our thoughts.
As I said in the spoiler-free version, I thought it was decent, but a step down from Curse. It lacked in spots, and shined in others, so I guess I'll give my good and bad.
The Good (Guy Doll):
- The look of the doll was great, and the effects were excellent. They did a great job with all of that.
- Given the multiple doll stuff, I really enjoyed the banter between them, and the scenes with Andy and the head from Curse.
- Post-credits scene with Kyle returning was friggin' awesome. I don't know if this is just a fan service, or if she's back for good.
- I enjoyed the music and the setting, I thought it worked really well for the film, especially considering the budget.
- I thought the other characters really meshed well, especially Malcolm because it could tease a possession.
- I thought Chucky had some great humorous lines without going overboard.
- I enjoyed (somewhat) seeing a human possession. I thought Fiona did a crazy job acting just like her dad, and they finally answered the question of what happens to the other person if Chucky transfers into them (it appears they remain in the body as well). This offers potential of Nica fighting back, but it could turn to a goofy scene like in "Me, Myself, and Irene".
- Chucky bleeds again, for the most part.
- Stitch-free Chucky for the most part.
- Glen and Glenda are nowhere to be seen.
The Bad (No more Mr. Good Guy):
- Not the biggest fan of the multiple doll thing, to be honest. Also don't like how just they did that "voodoofordummies.com allowed me to change the chant". It seemed like a cheap plot device. Also, the chant is completed multiple times in this movie, whereas in the first 5 movies, he completes it like 2-3 times. Also, are there any bounds or limits on all this? It seems not, and I don't really like that, as it feels to heavy-handed in that sense, and honestly it gets closer to feeling like "Harry Potter" with Chucky putting his soul in many things (like Voldmort did with Horcruxes). What stops Chucky from doing this with every single thing he touches? Just seemed too overpowered.
- As Gee said in the spoiler-free section, as much as I don't want to say it, Jennifer Tilly's acting wasn't that good. And it seems the Tiffany doll is alive to, which I am meh on. It just further contributes to "too much going on" in a limited amount of time.
- I don't like how they just kind of killed Alice off-screen and briefly explained what happened. I mean this was the pre-credits end to Curse, and it just gets kind of glossed over.
- Not really a big fan of Nica walking after she gets possessed. I know Chucky retains his strength when he's transferring his soul, but that doesn't cure paralysis, does it? I mean it's voodoo, so anything can happen.
- 2 dolls are alive in the asylum, the head at Andy's, Andy's locked up, Chucky is in Nica's body, Tiffany is in herself and a doll? Once again, feels like a bit much, obviously leaves many options for a sequel, but just felt like Chucky/Tiffany was a little to overpowered this movie.
