Just how much do we reckon he knew about Chucky?
When Chucky appears to him in his kitchen, John seems pretty upset about him transferring his soul into the doll. Yelling about him being an abomination. An outrage, against nature.
But it's kinda like, what, the hell, did you expect him to use this cool little trick for?
It's like saying here's how you swap bodies. But don't ever do it coz i'll be pissed at you.
Would it have been alright if he'd swapped bodies with another person? Because really, what scenario would John have deemed it 'ok' for Chucky to transfer his soul?
If he knew what an evil person he was, he shouldn't have taught him how to do it.
But on the other hand, if he didn't know how bad Chucky was, then why wouldn't he want his friend to carry on living after he'd run into a situation where it was the only option?

Oh yeah. He told him where he kept his own voodoo doll too. Why would you even have that? The second you make it, your screwed.
Screw it up and throw it in the bin? No chance, you'll break every bone in your body.
Burn it. When would that ever be a good idea?
Best idea of the lot. Don't make a voodoo doll of yourself. Otherwise you're asking for trouble

I'm gonna say Chucky fooled him. Chucky seems very manipulative and weaselly to get what he wants. But I think part of it was John's fault too, but I wouldn't say he's an idiot. I mean he knows how to swap bodies, that's gotta count for some smarts. But I think it was just John's personality. Didn't he have a run-in with the law that Mike or his partner brings up in his file? Maybe John had his bad days, and was trying to be a better person or whatnot, and became gullible.

Yeah I just skipped through to where Mike shows Karen his file, and it's just his mugshot. Mike doesn't really share what he did to get a record, just that Chucky spent a lot of time with him. Also, it might not even be a mugshot, it could be just a picture they took after investigating / questioning John trying to find out more about Charles Lee Ray in the past. Either way, it doesn't seem like John was that evil, but maybe he is some born-again voodoo person.

He could have been arrested for something small... like protesting at an abortion clinic whilst sacrificing a chicken.
Mugshots doesn't necessarily equate to evil.

Yeah, I mean Kramer did police line-ups for money, even though that eventually back fired on him.

Maybe making a voodoo doll of yourself is a requirement to be a voodoo priest. Sort of like how Catholics wear ashes on ash Wednesday as a sing of their faith... voodoo worshipers make a voodoo doll of themselves. Also I want to think that John was a decent man by the fact of the eclectic religious items he had. It could have been one of those things where he thought Chucky was a "good guy" (pun fully intended) and he later discovered that he had evil intentions. Also who is to say anyone knew that Chucky was the Lake Shore Strangler until the night of his demise. One thing Curse did show us was that his presence at that Barbeque didn't raise any red flags with anyone there. So I want to think that cops were on the look out for The Lake Shore Strangler but didn't identify him as Charles Lee Ray until Sarah notified the police. For all we knew it could have been when the news released the information about his shooting that John then knew... he was dealing with an evil person. In CP2 Grace Poole did say "a series of ritual voodoo killings" So a few hours or even a couple of days could have passed after he evaded the police that the basement hide out from where he was keeping Sarah. Just enough time for police to match up evidence with what was in that basement with the evidence from his crimes which then would have identified him as the serial killer that the authorities have been trying to capture. I want to think a good amount of time passed if Dec. Mike Norris was prompted to dress as a woman to lure him in a trap. Time would have had to of passed to make Chucky comfortable enough to come out of hiding to want to make a kill. Granted this part of the movie didn't make it in the final cut but the part where Mike throws off his disguise did... so I'll count it. And I come to realize that I have watched these films way too many times... that's why we're here...

Yeah, I always figured the voodoo doll was something he had to do in order to be able to do other stuff, like a trade off. Kind of like Voldemort and his Horcruxes.
But yeah, the fact in Curse Charles was out in the open and nobody knew what he did, that kind of makes me agree that there was a "Lake Shore Strangler" that eventually became identified as Charles Lee Ray, as opposed to it happening at the same time.
