Just as the title suggests.
Personally... I think the original had the best puppet effects. Not to sound mean but when you compare Kevin Yeager's puppet to Tony Gardner's... It looks like it's capable of doing more. Also more high tech looking and keep in mind this was 1988. It just seemed to have more going on with it's face articulations, and words coming out of Chucky's mouth looked crisp enough for a deaf person to lip read.
However, the sequels didn't seem to be as epic looking. They were great but there is just something missing I can't quite place my finger on. Perhaps a sense of realism that CP1 conveyed the best IMHO.
Now If I had to pick a second I would say Bride of Chucky had some really great puppet work. Especially when Chucky first speaks. Tiffany too looked good in some parts despite having a smaller head.

There are a LOT more choices than I expected...

Yeah I have to say CP2, and yeah, you gotta keep in mind the time when they shot this stuff.

That shot, when Andy's asleep and he's sat on the shelf, was incredible. Even now, the way he went from doll pose to alive is a joy to watch, the transition was seamless

Agreed, that is pretty much what seals the deal for me.

I'll agree that was the best transistion out of any film. Which is why I wish they stayed with him looking more doll than human. I know in CP2 the Good Guy had more of a neutral face position which helped sell the transitions easier. I also liked how his eyes didn't change when he went into alive mode because I noticed in CP3 his eyes would change. Of course Bride, and Seed had no real transition shots because of his stitched appearance.
Of course CP1 is forgiveable because we was going through a metamorphasis. lol
Curse was all over the place. :/
Still, in terms of basic puppetry and doll movement, CP1 just did it right. Also the little person mimicking the stiffness of the doll helped out a lot to.

And the fact they built a set 33% larger than normal for when they had a person in outfit. That was executed well.

Yeah... that was a really good illusion. I hate to say it but parts in Curse where a little person was used was very obviousl that it was a little person. They didn't try to make the costume proportioned to look like a doll's body, and the sets stayed the same size. Of course the one scene where using a little person would have been a better choice... CGI was used instead despite them filming the same scene with a little person.
I try not to get picky because it doesn't ruin the story for me, and I also know that Curse had a small budget and the purchasing power is decreased compared to what 5 million can buy back in the 80's.

Yeah. I'm a little concerned at the budget for the next film. I hope it gets spent wisely and not on irrelevant effects and salaries. The beauty of Curse was it was limited with the budget, which meant locations were limited and Don really put something into writing the film. Hopefully the next one will have a better budget and we'll get a few different locations, decent actors, sturdy puppets and puppetry and also a killer script.
