I like the irony of the scene. Even Shelton said "He survived 2 tours and then drops dead one night" I don't think it was meant to be funny as much as it was meant to be unexpected.

From what I've heard, the actor playing the role was supposed to be an R. Lee Ermey Full Metal Jacket type character, a real no-nonsense tough guy kind of thing, so it would have been funny if they had gotten an actor like that. Don talks about it in this video around the 12:30-13:00 minute mark:

I think that would have added more comedy to that scene. I wonder if that should be taken as a prelude that even then... they were looking to go into the more comedic direction.

Yeah, I think so. I mean closer to the beginning Don was talking about how he couldn't help but find Chucky in a lot of those awkward situations, which sort of led them to Bride lol
