It has been a LONG time since I have seen 'Bride', but from what remember I have never quite understood why Chucky all of a sudden needed an amulet he was buried with to transfer his soul to a human being. For the first three films, the audience was assured and reminded that to transfer his soul to a human body, it had to be the first person he revealed his identity to. Since he is in the same body (with very minor alterations and splices from other dolls) he was in from CP3, it would have made more sense if Chucky went after Tyler for this fourth film.
It has never quite sit well with me the odd transition between the third and fourth entry in the series. Before I saw 'Bride' I really appreciated the Child's Play series because of its realistic continuity. I never liked how in the 'Leprechaun' series each movie was pretty much a stand-alone movie. The sequels were completely unrelated. So much for the word 'sequel'... in that respect.
Well, if there is something I am missing, can someone explain why the amulet was needed in this film and not in the previous three films?

Yeah, Chucky needing the Amulet to transfer his soul into a human body doesn't really make sense, at least continuity wise. My guess is that it was created as a plot device for this movie. I doubt the idea of him needing an amulet even existed in the first three movies, lol. But even so, I at least liked the design of the amulet itself.

I am thinking it's what allows him to bypass the "transfer into the first person you told before it's too late" condition.

Always thought the same Spanky.
But also, notice how he was wearing it and managed to get from his human body and into the doll? Since then, no such luck escaping the body of the doll.
Maybe he realised this...

That's the other thing I wondered, which makes me wonder if John didn't tell Chucky the truth in the first movie when Chucky asked how to get out of that body.

Yeah... them adding the amulet condition makes no sense because I too had to wonder if that is what helped him escape death initially.
Here is how I look at th rules of this.
1. Soul Transfer No Amulet- Has to be the first person you revealed yourself to. Also has a time limit or you're stuck in host body.
2. Soul Transfer with Amulet- Can transfer soul into anyone with no time limit. Can also transfer more than one soul at a time.
That's the other reason why I think the amulet concept was introduced in Bride. There were now two dolls that needed human bodies and Chucky couldn't manage to get himself out of his own. How would he take care of Tiffany too... so I think the amulet served as a plot device in this sense.
Also Don did say that Bride was meant to be a film that can be viewed without seeing the first 3 movies by a new viewer. At the time Chucky was missing from our screens for 7 yesrs... so I think he took some liberties in the story line. Same with Seed and the same with Curse. They probably didn't realize at the time just how strong Chucky's fan following really was.
